Center of Mass: Balancing Masses

Topics: Mechanics - Center of Mass

Equipment: Balancing masses on black stand.

Setup: Simply place the balance mount (with the masses attached) on the stand. The apparatus will be perfectly balanced, as all things should be.

The height of each mass can be adjusted to show that it has no effect on the balance. In the bottom picture, the mount looks slightly tilted; this is because there is now some mass above the mount. If the supporting rods were massless, or instead made of some lightweight twine, the mount would not tilt at all. The masses can also be removed to see how (even though the mount itself is balanced) the mount will not stay balanced on its own.
