Ballistic Tube

Topics: Mechanics - Conservation of Momentum, Pressure

Equipment: Ballistic tube (metal tube on base with wheels, and large rubber stopper), dry ice.

Setup: Remove the rubber stopper, and fill the tube with dry ice. Replace the stopper, and place the cart on a smooth surface, with no obstacles in its path.

After some amount of time (depending on how much dry ice was placed inside), the dry ice will evaporate and the buildup of CO2 will pressurize the tube, and eventually the rubber stopper will be pushed out of the tube, and the cart will roll. Refer to the demo page “Conservation of Momentum” for information on the concept.
