My Teaching Interests:

I have taught a variey of courses, many of which I designed on my own:

• The "standard" introductory courses include a one-semester algebra-based course (at the time, required for students in the NYU nursing program) and a two semester calculus-based course for pre-health students. While teaching these courses I twice (1995 and 2000) received the NYU College of Arts and Science "Golden Dozen" teaching award.
• I designed and taught the first semster physics major "Introduction to Experimental Physics I," which included lectures on statistics and laboratory on measurement and programming.
• Upper-level physics major courses include the sophmore modern physics course (no longer taught here) and the junior level electromagnetic theory course.
• For several years I taught the graduate introduction to particle and nuclear physics course.
• I created and taught for several years a graduate course in the Department of Teaching and Learning of the NYU Steinhardt School of Education titled, "Recent Advances in Teaching Physics." The goal of this course was for students to think deeply about basic physics ideas, as demonstrated by their designing and conducting experiments to tests ideas discissed in lecture.
• I revamped and taught for several years a first semester course for physics graduate students, "Practicum in Teaching Physics." The goal of my course design, which used some input from results of physics education research, was to get students to be conscious of what they were doing as teachers, to enable them to begin to asking questions about what their goals were and to learn about studies being conducted and techniques being developed.
• I created and taught for several years a freshman seminar called, "Great Science, Fabulous Science, and Voodoo Science." The course used case studies to learn about how data is used to make conclusions (sometimes well and sometimes poorly), by scientists, and how the results of science are used (sometimes well and sometimes poorly) in the courtroom, in the media, and by legislative bodies.
• I have been involved in various forms of the physical science core course for NYU College of Arts and Science students. Most recently, with the help of a number of NYU experts, I created a flipped version of the "Quarks to Cosmos" course which I had originally designed a number of years ago. For the flipped version, students view video lectures (NYU personnel helped me design and record about 150 two to ten minute lectures for the semester) before coming to class. In class, students work on various projects in groups. I am still develping this course, but student performance so far makes me optimistic about the possibilities. Based on this work I received the NYU College of Arts and Science Teach/Tech Award in 2018.
• I have been a research mentor to a number of undergraduate and graduate students. This has been an especially rewarding form of teaching.
