The preponderance of evidence for long-ranged attractions between like-charged colloidal spheres has been collected by Norio Ise and his collaborators in a beautiful series of experiments spanning 15 years. Some aspects of this work and the controversy it has ignited can be found in Ordering and Phase Transitions in Colloidal Systems, edited by A. K. Arora and B. V. R. Tata (VCH, New York, 1996). A recently discovered example of a class of structural phase transitions in monodisperse charge-stabilized suspensions apparently driven by many-body attractions is described in H. Yoshida, J. Yamanaka, T. Koga, N. Ise and T. Hashimoto, Langmuir 14, 569 (1998).
