The milliQan experiment was proposed in 2014 by Andy Haas, who founded and leads the experiment in the NYU EPP group.
The new results published in Physical Review Letters on September 15th, 2025 are the culmination of a decade of research-and-development, commissioning, operations, and data analysis.
The experiment is the poster child of small-scale high-impact auxiliary experiments deployed at the LHC to detect long-lived exotic particles. NYU graduate student Zubair Bhatti played a central role in the commissioning of the Run 3 experiment.
These results open the world's greatest sensitivity to fractionally charged particles predicted in dark sector extensions of the Standard Model. This paves the way to further pathbreaking searches in the future.
