NYU EPP members are among the laureates of the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics awarded to the ATLAS Collaboration in addition to the other three main LHC experiments.
The citation of the award is: "For detailed measurements of Higgs boson properties confirming the symmetry-breaking mechanism of mass generation, the discovery of new strongly interacting particles, the study of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry, and the exploration of nature at the shortest distances and most extreme conditions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider."
The laureates include current NYU faculty Andy Haas, Jesse Liu, Allen Mincer, and Peter Nemethy (emeritus); current graduate students Matt Drnevich and Edison Weik; a former NYU faculty member; 6 former NYU graduate students; 13 former NYU postdocs or research scientists; and one former NYU undergraduate student.
The ATLAS spokesperson accepted the prize on behalf of the collaboration, which will be used to financially support students. NYU joined the ATLAS Collaboration in 2006 and spearheaded foundational physics results including the Higgs boson discovery, alongside important leadership in operations, trigger, simulation, and hardware upgrades.
