I arrived in Paris on February 1 of this year, and have since been working
in the Laboratoire Colloides et Materiaux
Divises at the Ecole
Superieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles (and no, I have no
idea
how to add accents typing into an HTML document in a Putty window). In
particular, I'm working with Djamal Zerrouki on combining our
encapsulation/cluster knowledge. Click here to see pictures of
my coworkers, and here to see a
picture of Djamal with Chewbacca (but you have to guess which one is
Djamal).
Living in France has been, um, a challenge, to say the least. I suppose
I didn't really expect to get by on my looks, but I'm having more trouble
with the language than I'd anticipated. Especially understanding it.
However, everyone seems to be incredibly accommodating, and every day is
an adventure! I'm living in a residential neighborhood, and there
really is a difference between the amount of English spoken in the
central areas and the amount spoken in the more residential areas. But
I've gotten to know my baker, cheese woman and wine man quite well, and
they are very patient with me when I explain that I want a very muscular
cheese...Now I just have to get them to coordinate my cheese, wine and
bread, and I'll be set.
My French may not be improving, but my English is definitely suffering!
