NYU Experimental Particle Physics Group

Welcome

The Experimental Particle Physics Group at New York University is thriving! After the termination of the MECO experiment, our group joined the ATLAS experiment. We recently hired a new faculty member, two research assistants, and now have several key roles in the ATLAS experiment. We are also active in the MILAGRO experiment and the LHC upgrade. Please have a look at our group.

The LHC is closing in on the Higgs!

On July 22, 2011 ATLAS and CMS presented the first major results from their respective searches for the Higgs boson at the EPS conference in Grenoble. Our own Kyle Cranmer presented the combined results from ATLAS, which showed an intriguing excess of events beyond the background and excluded a large range of possibilities for the Higgs boson mass in the Standard Model. By August the LHC had doubled the data, and on November 18, 2011 the results from first-ever combination of ATLAS+CMS Higgs searches were presented (image above). With it, our attention turned to a narrow range of Higgs boson masses between 114-140 GeV.

On December 13, 2011 ATLAS and CMS will present updated results with the remainder of the 2011 data. This will be an exciting development in the hunt for the Higgs as the additional data brings with it sensitivity to the entire mass range and the potential to see evidence for a this elusive particle.
