John Armstrong

MS 1983
With the exception of 1 year as an MRI technician at Columbia-Presbyterian Hosp. in NY and a brief period of unemployment, I've been employed for the last 14 years as a civilian physicist with the US Navy. The first 11 years were with a small ( less than 200 people) offshoot of the Naval Research Laboratory in Orlando Fl. The work revolved around underwater transducers, they needed to be calibrated and characterized , several systems were used to cover different frequency ranges and environmental conditions. My job involved making measurements, reducing data and programming . The programming was initially working with (primarily) HP instruments and computers and the data that came from them. As time went on and the PC and it's associated software evolved, the measurement and programming activity shifted to the PC world. In the mid 1990's a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) realigned the NRL lab to NUWC (Naval Undersea Warfare Center) and most of the lab moved to the much larger group ( about 3000) in Middletown, RI. At NUWC the group is now functioning as a version of NIST for underwater standards and transducers. My work has been programming measurement systems that are now VXI and PC based, with minor efforts in making utilities for data manipulation.
